Antifungal diet

General rules

Surface skin mycoses (PMK) and nails (onychomycosis) are widespread fungal diseases, the infection of which occurs through the contact-household way in case of non-observance of personal hygiene rules from a patient to a healthy person. The most commonly affected areas are the skin of the legs and nails. Clinical lesions with mycosis proceed the same way. The interdigital folds serve as the primary localization of the fungal infection; in severe cases, the process goes beyond them.

Manifests itself skin peeling and its subsequent exfoliation, then, in these places bubbles form filled with liquid, then burst, revealing cracks and areas of inflamed skin that itch, hurt and do not heal. Progressing, inflammation covers the plantar surface of the feet. The affected areas are very itchy and sore. The skin is swollen, hyperemic. When a secondary infection gets, the symptoms are aggravated by the secondary suppuration of these vesicles, which, when opened, form a deep wound surface. Usually, mycosis of the feet characterized by a chronic course with periodic exacerbations. A commonly encountered companion of mycosis of the feet is onychomycosis (nail damage). External signs of damage to the nail plate are a change in the color of the nails, thickening, clouding, crumbling and destruction.

The treatment of superficial mycoses of the skin and onychomycosis is complex and lengthy. The tactics of treatment depend on the stage of the disease, the area and nature of the skin lesion and consists in the use of local antifungal drugs (Lamisil, Clotrimazole, Batrafen, Exoderyl, Mycospore), with extensive lesions - creams containing corticosteroid hormones/antibiotic - Triderm, Diprogent, Celestoderm B with Garamycin. Systemic antifungal drugs (Terbinafine) apply only in extremely advanced cases. A diet for fungal skin diseases is also an element of a comprehensive treatment. It is a correctly selected nutrition that contributes to the inhibition of the growth and reproduction of pathogenic fungi while providing the body with food nutrients in accordance with the physiological norm.

The antifungal diet is based on the following principles:

  • Exclusion from the diet of all sugar-containing foods. To a greater extent, this applies to simple carbohydrates that contribute to the propagation of fungi. From the diet, it is necessary to exclude / limit to a minimum sugar, honey, chocolate, syrups, jams, preserves, confectionery, juices, powdered sugar, sweet fruits, purees, dried fruits. Artificial sweeteners should also be minimized. The total intake of the carbohydrate component in the diet should not exceed 60 g / day.
  • Limiting the use of foods containing large amounts of starch (potatoes, beets, white rice, carrots).
  • Exclusion of products that cause intestinal fermentation (yeast baked goods, fresh baked goods, kvass, milk, beer, sweet fruits, packaged juices, carbonated sugary drinks).
  • Exclusion from the diet of fatty varieties of red meat, sausages, blue cheese, canned food, junk food, convenience foods, sauces / seasonings, smoked meats, dairy products containing sugar, fruits / berries, alcoholic beverages.

An antifungal diet involves the use of at least 2.0 liters of free fluid per day, which helps to eliminate harmful substances from the body. Preference should be given to a rosehip broth, green and herbal tea, mineral still water. The antifungal diet as the basis of the diet includes low-carb non-starchy foods - dietary meat / fish, seafood, non-starchy vegetables and their juices, secondary broths, seeds, fresh garden greens, butter, fermented milk products without sugar / fruit, greens, cereals (except manna / rice groats), soy, juices from germinated wheat sprouts, salads, spinach, any kind of eggs, nuts, vegetable oils. An antifungal diet should be observed throughout the treatment period and 1-2 months after its completion to prevent relapse.

It is extremely important during the treatment period to include in the diet foods and decoctions / tinctures of plants or their finished dosage forms that enhance immunity - onions, garlic, ginger, spices (turmeric, pepper, zira), mountain ash, bird cherry, cranberries, lingonberries and their freshly prepared juices that have antimicrobial and antifungal effects. For increase immunity you can take adaptogens / antioxidants - tincture of ginseng, lure, eleutherococcus, sea buckthorn oil, tincture of echinacea, vitamin and mineral complexes.

Dietary nutrition for nail fungus is based on similar principles, given that the fungal infection of the nails is more persistent and takes a longer period of time. Therefore, it is extremely important for yeast nail damage to begin treatment as early as possible, since the effectiveness of the treatment of onychomycosis is largely determined by the degree of its neglect. Nail treatment involves periodic nail cleansing to remove exfoliated stratum corneum.

It is also recommended to practice nail nutrition at home using essential oils of lemon, lavender, rosemary, tea tree, bergamot (bergamot and lemon whiten yellowed nails well, and tea tree has an antifungal effect). Existing folk remedies for the treatment of nail fungus, as well as the recommendations of a number of authors (Tulio Simonchini) do not allow for complete cure, and lost time contributes to the neglect of the process.

Allowed Products

Dietary nutrition for fungal infections of the skin and nails includes the following products in the diet:

  • Low-fat varieties of red meat, rabbit and poultry meat, which are prepared by boiling / baking.

Beets, pumpkins and carrots are recommended to be consumed raw, since in the process of cooking they increase the sugar content. Some vegetables, for example, potatoes, if necessary, should be soaked in several waters to reduce the starch content. In vegetable salads it is recommended to add germinated cereals, seaweed, which are natural immunostimulants.
  • It is recommended to use vegetables rather than cereals for garnish. Eating porridge (brown rice, buckwheat, oatmeal) should be, as a separate meal and in limited quantities.

  • Improves bowel function, enhances immunity.
  • A diet deficient in easily digestible carbohydrates is difficult for many patients to tolerate.

Feedback and Results

Clinical nutrition for fungal infections of the skin / nails is an important component of the treatment process and, according to the overwhelming majority of patients, helps to relieve exacerbations of the fungal infection and increase immunity. However, some patients can hardly tolerate it, due to the lack of sweets, and therefore frequent “breakdowns” are noted.

  • "... I believe that the diet allows you to more effectively get rid of fungi. I had extensive mycosis of the foot, which began during the passage of military service and periodically worsened. The doctor recommended, in addition to special creams and ointments, to try to improve their condition with diet and taking probiotics. And for almost 3 months now I have been on a diet. Indeed, the fungus in the interdigital folds disappeared in almost 2 weeks. I think that the diet played an important role, since earlier fungal manifestations lasted even with treatment for up to a month";
  • "... I was diagnosed with onychomycosis after a microbiological examination of scraping from the affected nail. The condition is terrible, because my work is related to working on a computer and my hands are always in sight. Began treatment. In addition to drugs applied to the nail, she practiced the recommended diet. Additionally introduced cloves, cinnamon, garlic, barberry into the diet. Saw adaptogens to strengthen immunity. And after 1.5 months, the process moved in a positive direction. In addition, she also lost 4 kg. Of course, without sweets it was difficult, but the effect is worth it".
